The 10 Best Nintendo 3DS Games

E-mail Print PDF

There's an argument to be made that Nintendo 3DS$249.99 at is secretly the best game system in the world right now. Better than the PlayStation 4£349.00 at Very, superior to the Xbox One$399.00 at Dell, and, yes, a league above Nintendo's own Wii U$327.00 at Amazon. Yes, it's a bold statement, and, yes, it's sure to prompt nerd rage from many corners. But there's one very strong argument to be made in favor of 3DS preeminence, and it can be summed up in just one word: games. The 3DS simply has great games, and plenty of them.

Like its predecessor the Nintendo DS (the most popular portable video game system of all time), the 3DS has amassed an impressive array of high-quality titles (after an admittedly rocky start). Many of these excellent titles are the best games in their respective series. Despite the flack that Nintendo gets for its hardware decisions, the company still produces excellent software that almost always winds up at or near the top of the year-end best-of lists.

Speaking of Nintendo hardware, there are a few versions of the 3DS on which you can play these excellent games. There is the original Nintendo 3DS and the larger 3DS XL£149.99 at Both use 3D technology to grant games the illusion of depth in their graphics. Nintendo overestimated the popularity of 3D, which peaked with Avatar (but saw great use in Gravity), so it later released the lower-priced Nintendo 2DS$99.99 at Dell, a child-friendly system that resembles a Fisher Price toy and lacks 3D capability. You can play 3DS games (and original Nintendo DS games) on all three handhelds.

This guide includes ten of the best games (in alphabetical order) you can play on Nintendo 3DS today, including RPG, action, strategy, and adventure titles. There are even a few third-party titles on this list, proving the power of the 3DS to attract developers who don't mind competing with games starring Mario, Yoshi, and Kirby. You'll even find a game you can only download on the eShop, Nintendo's version of the iTunes Store.
