A Review Of The HTC Vive Deluxe Audio Strap

I'm known to be a big fan of virtual reality, regularly enjoying working out in VR, playing arcade games and, most recently, getting really into first-person shooter battles in Serious Sam VR.

But just because I enjoy the experience doesn't mean there still aren't pain points that could be addressed, and while the nausea that earlier versions of VR headsets provided is gone, other issues still remain. Hopefully, one of these will be addressed with the HTC Vive Deluxe Audio Strap.

One of my common complaints about the Vive is that there are so many wires, tangling up the long cable, and headphone cables twisting everywhere. It's clunky and frustrating and I've spent way to much time detangling them. The Vive Audio strap lets you replace your headphones with an all in one audio system, which sounds great, but does it live up to the hype?

What's in the box

The box is pretty straightforward; there's the headset resting on a plastic stand, a sticky cable tie and a manual. Everything is easy to see and I was immediately struck by how sleek the headset looked, and I liked the sheen on the plastic.

The setup process

The user manual is straightforward, and step one is removing the current head strap from your Vive. This was a little nerve-wracking as it involved tugging off the clipped on side parts, and I kept worrying I'd exert too much force and snap something, and then so long, expensive virtual reality gaming. Eventually, I managed to get the sides off with no breakage and unclipped the top part of the Vive where the audio cable and three cable system plugged in.

Next, I snapped on the new headset with a satisfying click and connected up the straps and wires. I liked that there was a clip that held the wires together on the right side of the system, and the sticky velcro cable tightened around them for extra security. This was a helpful addition, but also felt a little low-tech; it's a shame they couldn't have integrated the tightening into the strap or provided extra velcro tabs. The audio cable was simple to attach, though it was a tight fit which made it a squeeze to replace the top compartment. The headphones are easy to slide down, and they have a slide system that makes it easy to adjust for length.

In game user experience

I was impressed by how comofrtablw rhe headset was to wear and the extra padding allowed me to tighten it securely without getting those awful face dents that occur when pressing pieces of plastic tight to your face. The rgonomic dsign distributed the weigth evenly across my head, and the headphones were easy to adjust -- a cool factor was how you could bend them to angle them away from the ears when you were ready to stop playing.
